The history of the community goes back to 1887 when a railroad was built through the area and then later on extended to Homosassa. In 1893, a post office was opened and named after the nearby springs which were frequented by alligators. Homosassa Springs extends over a total area of 25.15 square miles, with a population density of 549 square miles, and the estimated population of the community was about 13,791 in 2010.
